When Behr purchased
the Dayton facility in 2002, they made a promise to the
employees to listen and act upon their concerns about the
cafeteria service, quality of food, social environment and
cost of the meals. Management and the Union formed
a joint committee to survey the employees, develop desired
food selections and establish fair pricing for the new products.
Behr also wanted to create an environment where their clients
could see, first-hand, Behr's commitment to their employees,
quality design and organized, efficient work environments.
Prior
to the cafeteria renovation, Behr employees typically chose
to go off-site for their work-time meals. This led
to congestion in plant parking lots and local food establishments
and created safety concerns with people rushing to get out
of the plant and back within their meal-time break period.
Within
a critically tight time frame, HRC and a food service consultant
had the construction documents approved by Behr and ready
for bidding.
The
cafeteria was completely demolished and renovated within
the existing footprint of the space. New exterior
windows into the plant were added, allowing natural light
to flow into the formerly windowless space. New flooring,
tables, chairs, ceiling finishes and food service (including
self-serve, hot meals and a fresh salad bar) were included
in the renovation. HRC integrated the design and materials
with the new, HRC designed, walk-thru break area located
next to the cafeteria. For plant visitors, clients
and employees alike, this efficient, contemporary layout
and quick delivery of design services, allowed Behr to meet
their commitment to their employees to make plant improvements
and implement them quickly for the benefit of all users.
