This $50 million
redevelopment converted 40 acres of central campus to include
the new Ferris State University Library for Information
Technology and Education (FLITE) and new Pedestrian Quad.
As the campus signature building and the largest capital
layout project in the institution's history, FLITE is a
gathering place for learning that incorporates information
and technology as a strategy for facilitating education.
FLITE is used not only by students and faculty but also
by the City of Big Rapids and surrounding communities.
HRC
was also retained by Ferris State to design a new Pedestrian
Quad to serve as a center for campus gatherings and activities.
The new quad replaced an existing roadway and parking lots.
The quadrangle has extensive paths that connect to all corners
of the campus, extensive landscaping, decorative lighting,
sculptures and pedestrian amenities. The new library and
surrounding buildings border the Quad and create a safer
environment for student gatherings and events. The project
included the reconstruction of the Timme Library to create
the Center for Student Services.
