HRC prepared
three separate grant applications for TEA-21 Transportation
Enhancement grants to fund the improvement of the appearance
of one mile of State Street (Old US-131) in Big Rapids, Michigan.
The streetscape concept involved creating up to eight
highly visible pedestrian crossings over State Street, constructing
eight distinctive gateways into the Ferris State University
campus. This project included replacement of lighting
with pedestrian lighting and attractive landscaping designed
to channel students through the new crossings, design using
pavers and stamped concrete, eliminating the uncontrolled
crossings on the 4,000 feet of roadway. Attractive
gateway entries were developed utilizing custom designed light
pillars to coordinate with the campus quad, and extend the
“first impression” impacts of visitors.
