In 1982, HRC developed
a Master Storm Drainage Plan for the City of Farmington
Hills designed to guide them during the continued development
of the City. As a result of record flooding along
the Grand River corridor including serious property damage
at the Red Roof Inn and two local automobile dealerships,
HRC was selected as the consultant.
The
Master Plan focused on the use of existing natural open
drainage system to its fullest, and ultimately utilized
a combination of open drains, enclosures, on-site retention
ponds and municipal retention basins to accommodate storm
flows safely through the City.
Several
prioritized alternatives were established to address the
immediate existing flooding problems as well as future anticipated
flooding problems. Each alternative worked together
to develop an overall Master Plan. Cost estimates
were prepared for each priority.
The
two flood relief projects that were recently constructed
were the Minnow Pond Drain and the Cadell Drain. Both
of these projects provided relief from overland flooding
that was being experienced within their districts.
