In 2003 HRC developed prototype web sites for the Village of Romeo and the city of Rochester, Michigan using ESRI's ArcIMS product. ArcIMS provides web access to GIS information saving software licensing, training, and installation costs. Web access to the GIS information can be distributed to a large audience (e.g., everyone on the Internet) or a small audience (e.g., employees in a specific municipal department).
These prototype sites are being used to test various approaches of presenting data to determine which best meet the needs of our clients. These sites are currently being designed to meet the needs of municipal employees. Data available on these sites include:
- Sewer System
- Water System
- Lakes, Rivers, & Streams
- Property Parcels
- Roads
- Aerial Photograph
HRC has developed custom security on these web sites so that
access can be customized according to the client's needs. Many other aspects of these web sites can be customized to meet the exact needs of the client as well.
These mapping web sites allow for GIS like access to data without having to purchase a license for GIS software. The only software that is required is a web browser.
