HRC worked with the
City of Southfield and the Oakland County Drain Commissioner
to design and implement restoration of approximately one
(1) mile of the Rummell Relief Drain between 12 Mile and
13 Mile roads in Southfield . The restoration includes
removal of accumulated sediments, channel reshaping to enhance
flow characteristics as well as aesthetics, native vegetative
bank stabilization with the use of a geo-cellular confinement
system and installation of nine (9) low-profile concrete
in-stream dams to maintain water level in the channel during
dry weather periods and create aquatic habitat. The
project also includes removal and replacement of three (3)
bridges, owned by the City of Southfield , located on the
Rummell Drain within the residential area.
The restoration work
was completed almost entirely within the existing permanent
drainage easement, using the channel bottom as a working
platform. Temporary easements were secured to address
the potential of wet weather flows forcing construction
activities to the top of bank areas, however, these easements
were seldom used. This construction method virtually
eliminated complaints from adjacent homeowners and reduced
construction costs.
HRC also assisted
the City of Southfield with obtaining $363,000 in grant
funding through the Rouge River National Wet Weather Demonstration
Project.
