Hubbell, Roth & Clark, Inc. teamed with GM to design and engineer an Off Road Test Course that could be used by its engineers to evaluate the performance of their Hummers, trucks, SUV's, and other off road capable vehicles in suitable terrain conditions. GM selected a densely wooded section of the Proving Ground in Milford, and directed HRC to design an off road course that would loop around and include several test features.

The test track features included two (2) hill climbs of varying length, slope and surface, a water crossing, 150 ft. water fjording section, a dry ditch, log crossings, moguls, whoopdy-doos, rock crawl, a low traction run, a washboard run, and a section of vertical wall climbs. The moguls and whoopdy-doos were erected using specifically designed precast concrete bumps that were positioned at various spacing intervals. The vertical wall climb was constructed of 8" reinforced concrete and featured four steps that started at 6" high and progressed in 6" increments up to a maximum of 24" tall. The water crossing and fjording sections utilized geowebs and geotextiles, along with crushed limestone aggregates, to control wear and erosion, and lessen the need for regular maintenance.
