The project is
located in downtown Rochester, adjacent to the Rochester/Rochester
Hills Public Library and the recently opened Royal Park
Hotel, a five-star facility and as such was required to
exceed standard aesthetics associated with bridge construction.
The bridge is located on the Paint Creek Trailway, a pedestrian
walkway connecting the Clinton River Trailway connecting
the Clinton River Trailway to the Polly Ann Trail in the
Village of Lake Orion, some 18 miles northwest. HRC
provided design and construction engineering services for
the critical bridge project funded by MDOT.
The design concept
salvaged the footings and a portion of the abutment, which
now serves as a scour wall, and served as the cofferdams
for the Paint Creek during construction. The box beam
bridge was replaced with a three sided precast arch bridge,
which overspanned the original abutments. The overspanning
was also necessary to maintain the floodway for the Paint
Creek, which expedited the MDEQ Permit process. The
salvaging of the footings and portions of the abutment reduced
the project cost by approximately $350,000 and reduced the
road closure by about three months, which was vital to the
downtown businesses. Cast in place headwalls were
constructed utilizing an architectural finish. The
original wing walls were salvaged and added to for height
requirements to meet today's requirements, as well as to
adjust to the elevation changes on University Drive to accommodate
the arched bridge.
