Helfer

Project Description:

As part of the City’s Road Maintenance Millage, the City of Wixom will be reconstructing the public roadways within the Helfer Leisure Co-Op complex.  The scope of this project includes the removal and replacement of the existing pavement and road base for the entire Helfer Boulevard.  The existing curb and gutter is in fairly good shape, but some curb will be replaced where serious deterioration has occurred.  A number of approaches will be removed and replaced within the right-of-way and will match the pavement roadway material and thickness.  The proposed replacement pavement cross section will be 3.5 inches of hot mix asphalt on 12 inches of 21AA limestone aggregate.

All of the existing sidewalk ramps at road crossings will be upgraded to meet the current standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.).  This will include the removal and replacement of each sidewalk ramp and the installation of raised dome A.D.A. tiles at each ramp that crosses the road.  There will also be sections of existing sidewalk that will be removed and replaced to meet A.D.A. standards.  The sidewalk will be extended to both the 12 Mile Road entrance, and to the Grand River entrance to connect to the recently installed Helfer safety path along Grand River Avenue.  Also, additional sidewalk will be installed to form a continuous walking route within the right-of-way, filling in the gaps that currently exist.

The existing sanitary sewer manhole covers will be removed and replaced with new “City of Wixom” hinged covers.  The top 2 feet of each sanitary manhole will be reconstructed, and wrapped in a butyl rubber membrane to protect against storm water infiltration.  All catch basins will be reconstructed and receive new castings.  A small quantity of damaged 12” diameter storm sewer will be removed and replaced near the south end of the boulevard entrance.  Other storm sewer improvements will be made as needed.

The total project cost is estimated to be approximately $400,000 to $425,000.
