Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow municipalities
to easily access data formerly stored on hard-copy drawings, in
spreadsheets or CAD files. Critical information about map
elements can be accessed via a single digital interface that can
be transmitted to work stations on a municipality's computer network
or across the internet. For example, using a mouse to select
a sewer pipe can show the pipe's diameter, length, material, year
of installation, and direction of flow.
During a water main break, GIS applications can quickly highlight
which valves need to be closed to stop the flow of water to the
damaged pipe segment. GIS-based asset management systems
can generate maps and reports of assets that are due for maintenance.
There are many other areas where GIS can facilitate efficient
access to information. HRC's GIS team has the expertise
to develop GIS applications that meet your specific needs.
